Washed Linen...makes a Fantastic Slipcover!!

While you were away.....at the lake or beach or with family and friends...I completed this slipcover! I do believe it is my favorite to date....I think I say that very same thing each time I complete a project :) But it is the linen-the washed linen...and in natural-such a beautiful, neutral color. It can't be wrong anywhere. As a matter of fact---I think it is absolutely perfect, especially for Betty Jo!

This 2 cushion sofa is showing a bit of its age in its red stripe upholstery...and the seat cushions are worn and sort of thin. When Betty Jo called to ask about slipcover options for her sofa-I immediately suggested linen. And not a crisp pressed linen...but a fabulously casual, washed linen-in natural!
This sofa required about 18 yards of fabric....for the slipcover in a tailored style. Cushion covers with cording and zipper closures-and an extra piece of bonded poly batting added about an inch to the cushion....and that gives the sofa a little more personality and comfort.
I made the slipcover for the main sofa body with a little bit of oversize...not too much....just a bit....for a casual appearance-and, to be able to remove the slip for necessary washes.

My workshop is rediculously packed with too much fabric....and supplies and pieces of furniture to slip...and nursery bedding...and pillows. So please understand if you come my way or notice the backgrounds in the photos I post....that everything you see has a purpose...or, just maybe, a potential purpose as a part of a sewing project...or furniture re-do. Thank you, God....for work and clients! I love what I do!

Artsy Potting Table

Just in time for your Springtime gardening projects-an artsy potting bench! Bobby made this one with salvaged finds including the old wood door with great single pane windows-leaving the door knob and lock intact, rough wood re-purposed from a shipping crate, some random vintage iron pieces to add a bit of personality, and even a few pieces of old kitchen flatware....flattened and shaped into hooks for functionality.
This piece is a large one...measuring 78" tall and 31" wide. The table area allows 25x24" of work space at a comfortable height of 35". There is a lower shelf of equal size below to hold potting soil and extra clay pots.
A couple of great add-ons for this piece include the side mounted iron towel bar....how cool is that?...made from an old iron rod...and the wood box to keep your scissors, twine, and small garden tools in check. Bobby even made a small shelf and attached it to the window area of the door--this shelf could hold small bedding plants, seed packets and even a little topiary for decoration. Bobby added a pale antiqued aqua to the work table and accessories for a little color and fun!
Use your own ideas, too...to make this unique piece work into your porch or patio! Aside from the traditional gardening use, this table could function as an outdoor grilling "prep table"...or beverage center....or a serving table loaded with hors d'oeuvres and cocktails for an outdoor get-together around the pool. Bobby has an early Friday delivery planned for this piece...to his booth at Old South Antique Mall in Dothan, Alabama...stop by and take a look if you are close-by!

Bobby's Latest Tables from the Workshop!

Bobby has been quite busy as of late....and, I do mean late....at night... :)
And he has a couple of great new tables available...they were delivered to our new booth at Old South Antique Mall in Dothan, Alabama...just this afternoon. I think you will agree that each has a unique style...and each could serve most any purpose you could imagine. So...a few photos to share...and I will give you sizing details...just in case you are wondering...
The long buffet style table would be great at just that....a serving table. It would also function equally in your entry or mudroom...with baskets on the lower shelf to hold just what you need. An old shutter door serves as the top of this piece. The buffet table measures 16x78x34 inches tall...
Table #2....oh...this is a great one! A beautifully rustic foyer table...or that's what I call it! A vintage window 45x23 tops this handmade item...and with Bobby's carpentry skills...farmhouse style legs have been added along with a skirted surround below the window top. This table has a finished height of 35".
So...use them as you would like...in a new home, your cottage...or at the lake or beach...these tables can suit most any purpose and be great conversation pieces to add to your collection!

A Slipcover for the Lake House

This one-of-a-kind daybed started as most of my other slipcover projects...a phone call, an email with a photo or two, a few more phone calls....thank you to all my clients who understand that I don't have time to personally meet with each one of you to discuss your project...and I digress :) I work for myself, by myself...with no other help....well, except for that of my super wonderful pick-up and delivery man husband and friend, Bobby! But he does not sew...well, not yet, anyway. Slipcovering projects are very time consuming...and I so try to keep my prices affordable so that I can continue to have work to do. But, although I know that it means a lot to everyone to take "only a few minutes" to discuss your particular project...those few minutes always turn into at least an hour....and I do not necessarily charge for my consult time...so, I am actually loosing time from my sewing business when I am not sewing. I guess that is confusing, at best...but it makes a whole lot of sense to me...I have, at any given time, about 10 projects in line....some small, some large...but to take an hour or so away for consults gets me "off task" just enough to slow my production. It is not that I do not want to meet with anyone at all-I love people and I enjoy sharing my home and workspace-messy as it is :) But I am already running a bit behind...and then I get a little nervous when people start calling and wondering about their items...so, again, I say-thank you for understanding my business-small and simple as it is! I can always take a little time on the telephone and email for ideas, discussing your yardage requirements, fabrics, style, and any other important and not-so-important thoughts...some of my clients have even been so kind as to have forwarded photo ideas for me to consider in other projects...so, back to this wonderful daybed.
This client so understood my time dilemma...and gave me time to finish my other projects....and that allowed me time to concentrate on hers...and she also allowed me a little "artistic license"...although most of this project was my client's idea. We agreed on a warm white prewashed linen for the daybed base...I was thinking a tailored style...but I am so happy that we decided on the gathered skirt...a wonderful cottage-y, romantic look for this piece...Mary Lynn had previously bought the quilt that I used for the mattress cover...I made a box style cover...with zippers on both ends....to remove this enormous mattress for washing the slip...no cording on this mattress cover...the quilt is so very thick that I felt it was unnecessary...I think the look is spectacular-cozy and relaxed!
The bolster pillows....our plan was to use left-over quilt pieces around the pillow with a ruffle of linen...but, there was no left-over quilt. I am always getting requests for burlap pillows-so I thought about that fabric for the bolsters...only instead of natural burlap...we used white. This added another wonderful texture to the mix! The two Euro pillows seemed to call for my standard "Etsy" ruffled pillow style...the ones with the 1" ruffled edge around the perimeter...so there. I made each pillow with a zippered closure...so that the slips are removable...the linen covers are washable...the burlap-maybe just spot clean.

I only wish I had been able to take this piece out onto the meadow for a real photo shoot - it would have been lovely out in the green grassy pasture...instead, a few shots from my messy workroom...and, I could not get the whole piece in a photograph! I hope to have a few photos from the proper home of the daybed...if so, I will share...

New Projects for a New Year

So it's back to work here...we had a super Christmas and New Year with our family-you know, it is great to have all of your grown children at home again :) And, Brantley-such a smart young man...spent Christmas Eve at home with me and Bobby....and, he knows that if you believe (and play the part)-Santa always pays a visit :) As long as you believe, Santa is real!!!
OK-with the decorations finally put away-I have finished a couple of projects that I thought I would share.
One- an Etsy custom order- nursery bedding...my favorite...you know, the ruffled edge bumpers and crib skirt. This client requested natural handkerchief linen -- here is the listing:
Classic nursery bedding in natural handkerchief linen, all prewashed and dried before construction. These softened linen nursery bedding pieces are finished with a 1" gathered ruffle edge. The four bumper pieces are made as separates...each with a zipper closure encasing the covered padded inserts. The bumpers are sewn with wide self-fabric ties that are made long enough for large bows. The crib skirt has a drop length of 17.5" including the ruffled edge.
I so enjoy making these sweet nursery pieces...and the softened linen is wonderful...in any color choice.
My other finished project is an ottoman and slipcover using medium weight chocolate brown linen. I made this slipcover in a simple structured style with a 1" gathered ruffle hem. This ottoman and slipcover will be sold together...but I would be happy to make a slipcover for your existing ottoman-for a great update! I have this ottoman and slip ready to deliver to our booth at Old South Antique Mall in Dothan...tomorrow :)

A November to Remember...I am Thankful

This month has always been one of my favorites...remember when you were little and your favorite month was your birthday month? Yea...still true...not just because of my birthday, but November is just a beautiful time of year...the colors of nature and the beautiful crisp fall days-the sun even shines differently in November-the sky is more lovely, especially in the late afternoons when I walk my dogs and talk to God. I do this each day-it is my time-and usually only about 20-30 minutes...but it is a great time to reflect and thank God for all He does for me and my family.
It has been one of the most unusual months for me...Bobby had hernia repair surgery at the end of October-not a big deal, we thought...after having put it off for about 7 years. So Bobby decided to get it done...we are so busy, always, so no time is good----really. But-a few weeks-and back to work sounds simple enough...
Bobby developed (?) this infection...so sick...just not feeling well...and the site of the incision-well...infected-not good at all...Thankfully, he is on the mend now...and I truly mean "thankfully"-it has not been easy. I have tried to work and I have worked (lots!) ...but it is not the same to work when you are a bit worried about things-and, to tell you the truth - I am not a very good nurse. So, it is great to see him improving daily and feeling more like himself. He was actually so sick during the week of my birthday...and on the very day- he was in town running errands and did not come home until late. He was "looking for something"...he told me when I called to check on him...and so, you will never guess what he found for me for my birthday-you will never guess, so I will tell you...it is precious, you see, -not expensive- as he said "it is the least of nothin'"...but to me,-my favorite gift this year. A toboggan-hunter orange! Is that a hoot? You see, it is deer hunting season here and my "walking territory" is close to other hunting property-he bought it for me to wear while walking the dogs:) And the birthday card-you should see it! A handwritten note on a folded piece of printer paper..."Happy Birthday" on the front, opening to "You are the sunshine in my life...can't wait to fix the house" "all my love"...now that is worth a million $$$$, don't you think? Just the sweet thought when he really felt lousy...and the "fix the house" part...you see, we keep planning our small house remodeling project...other things get in the way, but we keep planning. Anyway, he is the greatest, sweetest, most caring and unselfish person I know-I mean, I really wanted to give "somebody" a piece of my mind when he developed that infection...but not Bobby, he is so kind and doesn't blame anyone at all-he is so good...just had to share that with you:) For Bobby, I am thankful.
And, my other favorite birthday gift...my dad called and sang to me...the "Happy Birthday" song...I will tell you, that will get you every time. For daddy, I am thankful.
Our daughter and son-in-law and grandson are getting ready to build a house close-by on the farm...now, I can't wait for Grayson to go for walks with me...and walk to my house to see me...and walking he is-everywhere now!!! For this move, I am thankful!
I have had a super sales month...lots of drapery orders and nursery bedding, and pillows...thank you, God...for these orders, I am thankful!
Going to my parents' home tomorrow for Thanksgiving Dinner! For this, I am thankful! It is great to visit my parents and family-Always!

A Pair of Barstools with Cottage Slips

Enough of that hiatus...what have I been doing???? More of the same...working-sewing-it seems that sometimes you can get behind with orders even on Etsy.
I am so thankful for Etsy...it stepped into my world when I needed it most! And, one day...maybe I can retire to only Etsy. I started my Etsy shop when after the Christmas holiday, there was not so much work...I had been thinking about how I could ship window treatments and pillows and other specialty items, but to who?...nobody across the country knew that I could sew. I did not realize that I could just "plug-in" to Etsy...the clients are already there-looking for quality handmade items.
Well, it has been great! The clients are kind...but they want their slipcovers and pillows and nursery bedding as soon as possible, too! And, as I have repeated many times, I have no elves...that show up at my workshop and sew all night long. That would only be me...and, I try not to sew past midnight. I think people in general do not realize the amount of time it takes to make one ruffled pillow...much less the time it takes to make a complete nursery with ruffles.
You know, one order is one order, but each one order combined...throws my world into a "free for all" race to the finish.
I really have not had the time lately to do some of my favorite "one of a kind" pieces. I love to find those certain pieces of furniture and change them up a bit.
I took a little time away tonight to do just that. These barstools (probably from the early 2000's) ...whitewashed rattan type bases...that part is ok for me. But the cushions were bright plaid...and dirty bright plaid. So, I covered them in natural cotton duck. And already an improvement I think. But to add a little interest, I made burlap slips with an ivory cotton ruffled edge. I love the simpleness of the color...the texture...and the ruffled edge-its just a cute thing...
So... simple, cute, classic barstools...a pair of them... 16" x 16" and 29" tall. Great seating with or without ruffles.
OK, now tomorrow...I will finish that Etsy ottoman slip-promise!

A Trip to Say Good-Bye

I've been a bit busy...completing some small projects, directing Bobby on a couple of his projects, and tying up some loose ends. I'll be away a few days...not a vacation...no, a very sad few days...

You see, I have always loved going to Texas-my mother's family lives all over the state. But this trip is not for fun---I must say good-bye to my Grandmother...she passed away on Sunday-and, oh I will miss her. She was the grandmother who took time to help me make my first skirt...and on a summer visit when I was maybe 12, she took me to the craft store and purchased supplies so that I could decoupage and make my very own purse-you remember the wood boxes...and I think I selected Holly Hobbie prints to decoupage. And she always had cookies baked for us (my siblings and me) to ice and decorate. And on later visits, she would help us coordinate our trips so that we could go to First Monday (the Canton, Texas flea market and antique sale)...I am really overwhelmed-there is so much to remember and share. So for now, I will direct you over to my daughter's website-she has a special post there to honor my grandmother-her great-grandmother...and, no one could have said it better. Thank you, Lauren.

More White Slips

After learning that white cotton duck was sold out EVERYWHERE- I suggested to Elizabeth (Kappa Delta Sorority in Troy) that we should maybe try the white hopsack fabric for the chairs and ottoman slipcovers. I had already requested samples...and, it would have great texture as well as durability-14 oz as opposed to the 10 oz duck...
As usual practice, I prewashed and dried the fabric before beginning the slipcovers-only with this fabric, I cut smaller yardage per wash load. I normally cut 6-7 yards, but with this fabric having more bulk, I think I probably cut and washed about 4 yards/load. I also serged the ends that I cut to keep them from fraying in the washer and dryer. The hopsack washed and dried beautifully- and it does have this super texture and body...which adds a lot of interest and design to the white fabric.
I think the chairs and ottoman slipcovers look great in the sorority house...along with all the other new and/or restored pieces.
Elizabeth also ordered fabric yardage for lumbar pillows for the chairs and a large 48" square ottoman from Tonic Living. These fabrics are some of the cutest contemporary prints I have seen lately. It's always nice to learn about new fabric sites :)
As you can see in the before photo of the chairs-they are in perfect condition...so, how do you go from perfect to better??? And, really-I guess you don't so much...but the slipcovers in white simplify and unify the new look...and with slipcovers, you have options :)

Bobby's Post

I wanted to share some of Bobby's newest furniture pieces and decided that today is the very best day of all to do just that! Happy Birthday, Bobby!!!
Bobby has come a long way with his building skill level since way back in the day-probably the early 80's when we were out shopping and I wanted to buy a shelf-you know the one-about 3 feet long, brown stain, country style with a couple of pegs and I think a heart cutout....I am sure it had a heart cut-out...all shelves of that day had heart cut-outs :)
Anyway, I wanted to buy this beautiful shelf...and Bobby said, "I can make that." So, as they say, the rest is history. I had no idea he could build things-nor did he, probably. But, being a farmer-he had to work on and fix most things himself...so, I guess he sort-of taught himself building skills by copying :) or shall we say "reproducing" things we found or bought.
Bobby made shelves, cabinets, Christmas ornaments, wood boxes, and a host of all sorts of other things that anyone might want...those were the craft show days...did I mention Bobby was a farmer??? Well, those farming days were a little (or alot) tough. Bobby and I both quickly learned that maybe his building skills would pay better than farming.
Bobby's craft show and cabinet building skills turned into home repair and remodeling skills as he ventured into some larger projects. He really is amazingly talented...with a unique style sense! I am very proud of all his accomplishments...I think maybe he is, too,...but you would never know because of his humble, quiet personality. But if you have an idea and want a unique, artsy piece of furniture...just ask him...but make sure he knows you are serious---just like the day we met Elizabeth and Stephanie at the Kappa Delta Sorority House at Troy University...they were really busy making decisions...and Bobby kept asking me, "am I supposed to be here?"-I think he sort of felt out of place...away from his comfort zone of "the barn".
Anyway, they got around to mentioning a couple of items they had in mind for the sorority house...and thought Bobby would be able to create just the pieces. And, I think he did just that...
Bobby has built several different benches, but he wanted these to really "show up"...and they do. But I am most thrilled with the coffee table they requested...and I hope to see Bobby build some other pieces similar in style (well, I PLAN to see Bobby build some other pieces similar in style :)

And What About This Charming Natural Nursery???

Oh, my heart! Something about this crib bedding in natural lightweight softenend linen...so understated and simple. Just the detail of the ruffles to give it a little personality...shown here on my "workshop" cottage style crib, but wouldn't it look great on any baby bed out there??!!
And maybe even add a cording in ballet pink or pastel blue...for just a hint of color.
The bumper is made of four separate pieces with simple one inch ties-each piece of the bumper made with a zipper closure and wrapped poly insert that is removable for laundering.
The crib skirt measures 21 inches including the one inch ruffled hem.
The 12 x 16 inch pillow features a one inch ruffled edge and zipper closure to enclose the polyester pillow form.
Other nursery items available...crib coverlet, window treatments-roman shades or panels,...and other options :)

Slipping in a Wingback-Cottage Style

I am waiting....for the white cotton duck-it seems to be on backorder....everywhere. Who bought it all?????? I have a couple of chairs and an ottoman coming up for the Kappa Delta house in Troy-----meanwhile, back at the workshop---I had a call to slipcover a wingback. So, why not-I have time to "slip" :) it in.
And, was I ever surprised to see the fabric....a cute cottage-y floral matelasse. Now, I have enjoyed all the white and natural lately-but this sweet cottage style fabric was a welcome change. I think I will maybe change my fees to include "a list of your favorite fabric shops"...I would love to know where Kathy bought this fabric. Matelasse is such a great fabric-a little more difficult to work with when adding cording and sewing through multiple layers...but the texture and the quilted effect is worth it.
Kathy requested a gathered skirt...and, I hope she was thinking a short, gathered skirt...adorable, I think :)

Plans to wash some white cotton duck in the next couple of days and start the slipcovers for the Kappa Delta chairs and ottoman.

Preparing the Nursery for Master John Rivers Oliver

"...Know you what it is to be a child? It is to believe in love, to be so little that the elves can reach to whisper in your ear; to turn pumpkins into coaches...And nothing into everything. For each child has its fairy godmother in its soul." This small excerpt from a poem by Francis Thompson, an English poet...is my favorite. It truly speaks the sweetness of children-the innocence, the wonder, the simpleness of their spirit. I have had the honor to be inducted into the "grandmother" society...and, I will admit, there is nothing quite so grand!
And, now...it is time to share this society with my sweet sister-in-law, Vicki...well, almost time.
Preparations are underway now for the new nursery. We are super excited that the parents-to-be, Beth and Bryan, have moved a little closer to home-that part makes everybody happier, really :)
Bobby and I made a visit and nursery bedding delivery to their new home in Montgomery just yesterday. You know, there is always something special about custom nursery bedding...first of all, mom-to-be always loves the design since she designed it herself...and, when you place it in the new crib... the fabrics and colors add a completeness to the space.
Beth and Bryan are still adding pieces to the nursery...the rocker and ottoman are being reupholstered...and I think the hunt is on for a dresser...and some artwork.
But for now, anyway, the nursery is precious in its soft grey-blue paint color and window treatments made by "Sister". Hey, I want to know-can this be your "grandmother name"???
And, let me tell you-the window treatments are wonderful-full floor length panels hung from rings showcasing the main print -a nursery rhyme toile "Over the Moon"- with a band of seersucker sewn down the lead edges. Details of the blue and white seersucker bows are placed at the top of the panels at the rings. The panels are interlined with a blackout lining-great idea for baby's naptime- and finished with drapery lining. Absolutely perfect, Vicki!!
The crib, a beautiful iron baby bed in bronze, is the focal point...what a beauty! Beth has planned some artwork to hang over the crib-maybe she will send me photos...
One other great find is the tiny chest of drawers-to hold all the tiny clothes for baby.
Now, back to the crib...I had the honor of making the crib bumper and bedskirt. Beth requested a pillow style bumper with a darling mixture of cottage style nursery fabrics. The inside of the bumper features the nursery rhyme toile, the outside is a blue diamond matelasse, a soft green cotton was chosen for the cording and the ties are made with the blue and white seersucker stripe.
The gathered floor length bedskirt in the blue and white seersucker finishes the bedding, except for the coverlet. It is being quilted and should arrive soon.

Soft Aqua-Could it have a calming effect? I HOPE SO!!!!

OK...So, it seems that the last couple of weeks have put Bobby and me over into a new place of crazy/busy!!!! Be careful what you wish for, but I will say most importantly, "Thank you, God!".
We are continuously trying to find a new twist to change up some of our favorite pieces-and, I could not wait to take this one to our booth at Old South Antique Mall yesterday....but, we had a call from someone local, and when I mentioned we were busily getting ready to go to Dothan to measure a home for roman shades and other things, she immediately asked, "are you taking anything to the antique store?" I answered, hesitantly-(am I crazy?)-"well, yes...we have a few things to carry to our booth..."
Well, the story goes on that she wanted to come here immediately (before we left) to see "the new bench"...and, although I told her we would make her another one similar -I never know if we can do 2 things exactly the same-no promises in that area :) - she insisted that she would buy the bench, and a couple of other smaller pieces right then and there...and, as much as I appreciated the sale, I really did want to take that newest project to display at Old South Antique Mall.
We really have not had time to go on our favorite "day jaunts" to find some new items to add to the mix in our booth...but, I am sure things will settle down....but what do you wish for? A sort of nice problem, I'll say...
At least, I did take a few photos of my favorite piece of all time (to date) to share with you. Maybe you have some existing pieces that we could help you "change up" ...let us know, but don't call before 9, please...we sometimes work really, really, really late...and, these 6 am phone calls- well, not so good. Thanks for understanding!!! I can't believe I am actually writing about that, but it happens, and I know that we should be up at 6am, and maybe once in a while we are--but I try to handle my emails and home stuff first thing...and, out to the shop maybe by 9ish...I guess when you work from home, it's kind of whatever...there is no escaping it! Again, nice problem...sometimes :)
OK----thanks to everyone for accepting us for our eccentricities, oddities, and...our artsy lifestyle. We Love It Here in our World!!!!

Mix and Match... a Pair of Wingbacks

My latest slipcovering project has transformed Jane's two different wingback chairs into a pair for her bedroom. The chairs are both great pieces, really...but totally different styles. It is amazing to see how fabric can totally change furniture.
Each chair has its own unique details-arm style, legs and feet, and seat cushion. With only their "wings" to unite the two-Jane left the rest to the fabric. And, the white cotton duck definitely unified and completed the pair. Jane plans to paint the legs and feet....I don't know if I could bear to add paint to those wonderful old dark ball and claw feet-I so love really old and worn, timeless antique pieces-untouched and left in their original state. But to each his own...I know people have different design tastes-and I accept that...and, after all, I am no decorator--just a seamstress really with a few artsy ideas of my own :)
But taking a couple of old chairs and creating this "pair" of wingbacks was a good idea...

A New Bench with Personality

Bobby and I added a new bench to our booth at Old South Antique Mall. This one sort of took on a Sundance look-and it is our "go to" look....a little rustic and primitive, but it would mix in most any space. It has loads of personality-and the neutral color and fabrics allow that "mix-it -in" style to work for most anyone.
The bench is somewhat oversized...and with the great chunky spindle legs and distressed cream finish, it would suit as a coffee table-add your tray to the top if you wish. With or without the prewashed muslin slipcover, this piece adds a charm to the utilitarian bench.
We added a four inch upholstered foam cushion to the top-covered in a rustic natural burlap-to add a good look and texture. I love these versatile pieces-so many uses- and practical furniture with good looks, too :)

Hooray for the Red, White, and Blue

I took a little break from my normal home decor projects to make a couple of cute john john's for my sweet grandson. Grayson is almost one year old-I can't believe it!! He is crawling everywhere, up and down steps, included...with a little coaching from his Poppa, Bobby :)
I love these little outfits on baby boys-classic little rompers...great for summertime and picnics, get-togethers and a parade!!!
There are lots of variations, but I love the classic ones with a little elastic added to the legs. I enlisted the help of my daughter, Lauren, to cut out the fabric for Grayson's little suits. She did a great job and saved me some time in the mix. As a matter of fact, she cut out enough fabric for about 7 outfits. I put together a couple the other night...the red plaid should work for the 4th of July parade...all Grayson needs now is a little flag to wave :)
Happy 4th of July to you all...here's to the RED, WHITE AND BLUE!!!!! Enjoy your picnics and get-togethers, fireworks and parades!

A Pop of Color for Summer

This pine hutch was a popular craft show and country craftsman furniture item from the 90's...let me remind you-the really, really dark stained pine pieces :)
Bobby built similar things then, but he found this one at a local thrift store in all it's glory-missing a door. The piece is quite the storage cabinet (standing at over 5 feet tall and about 4 feet wide)-with all the drawers and shelves...and, how cute would a basket be in the open bin.
A great distressed sunflower yellow with a brown glaze added lots of cheer and personality to this dark hutch. Bobby re-used the original knobs and handles, although they could be easily updated as well.
Perfect in a kitchen or breakfast room...or brighten your daily routine by placing this piece in the mudroom for extra storage and an organization area as a drop off for mail, pet treats and leashes, schoolbooks...and all your everyday "stuff".

Troy Antiques has added a new area in "the vault"...anything and everything baby and child...nursery, playroom, and kid's room furniture, bedding (by order at the moment), pillows, toys...and all other sorts of accessories-both vintage and re-purposed. Stop by when you can and check out the latest!
Gail (aka Miss Hettie's) found this great small platform style rocker. She painted it white and distressed it a little-and brought it to me for the fabrics. And what exactly do you do? Boy, girl, pastels, brights???? How do you know what someone will like? So, we opted for white-a cotton duck gathered skirt that ties onto the base under the seat cushion. The seat and back cushions are covered on one side in white duck and the other-an old white cotton bedspread which gives a super vintage appeal and adds great texture to the all white piece.
But I just had to add a little color, so I decided on a little 14" ruffled pillow in a sweet pink cotton rose stripe print. The pillow, I decided, could be easily changed for a different look.
This sweet chair would make a charming accent not only in a nursery, but in almost any cottage-y setting.

Crib Bedding in Linen

Oh so sweet crib bedding in linen-a great natural fabric that gets softer the more it is washed and used. Linen can be such a formal fabric but takes on a more casual look when washed and dried. Ottomans and Etsy

Take your existing ottoman and give it a new look!!!! Use a slipcover-and this summer-make it using burlap and a little natural cotton ruffled edge-very sweet and casual.
A lot of the older ottomans, you know the ones-with the fitted upholstery and cording-skirted with the stiff crinoline inside, are great pieces to start. First, take the skirt away. Let the legs show-and really, most of these have the square stained post legs-the really older ones. The legs are usually not fancy, they may be even a little rustic-even better. And, the legs are probably stained a dark walnut or similar color-PERFECT!
After removing the skirt...and revealing the cute little legs, add your updated slipcover for a simple new look.
My latest Etsy interests have been these great little slipcovers. The burlap gives great texture and mixing the natural cotton ruffle sweetens and softens it a bit.
Add a couple of matching pillows to complete your new look.
Not such a big deal...but a super summer, casual look.

When Life Gives You A Busted Door, Make a Potting Bench!

At a rental property-between renters-kind of scary...but sad, nonetheless. Someone broke into an old house by kicking in the window of this door-well for whatever the reason, I couldn't handle throwing the door out...I'm just not good at throwing anything away that could be a potential art project-and I sort of see these inanimate objects with a sort of Walt Disney like realness :)
So-to Bobby's workshop we go to check on the door that has been in waiting for about a year or two or three, maybe...waiting for the day it would be chosen. Well, it's day came-the day for the Shabby Potting Bench! Bobby pulled together some odds and ends to create this fun work table.
The door came with original crackled white paint and a single row of windows at the top (left intact and amazingly unbroken). The destroyed area of the door was "patched" with chicken wire-which would be a great trellis for a little ivy, by the way. A work area of whitewashed pine boards was added as was a bottom shelf (for storing potting soil, ...)
Bobby then added a few hangers and hooks he made from old silverware, a vintage doorknob, and a large rusty cuphook.
A small barnboard shelf rests on a pair of old whitewashed spindle pieces. And my favorite addition to this piece is the old iron bar that Bobby added to the side of the work top-a great place to hang a towel for clean up.
Whether you use this piece as a place to pot your plants or an organizer of sorts in the mudroom or sunporch...it is truly a "green" piece of furniture-all leftovers, reused and repurposed...and a cute, shabby one, too! And just so happy to be here :)

A Vintage Ottoman Remake and a Slipcover

Somehow you just know...the age of a piece of upholstered furniture. And usually the outdated fabric is the giveaway. Remember the big plaid with the rubber backing....yes, that is it...as a matter of fact-big green plaid with a rubber backing. This ottoman was covered in it-head to toe. So, for a little update-I first persuaded Bobby to remove the box pleated floor length skirt that was attached with lots and lots of long staples....obviously, the manufacturer did not want this skirt to fall off:)
Next, to remove the hints of that plaid fabric, I made a fitted cover of a basic drapery lining fabric.
That was enough to show the piece of furniture nicely and make a decision of how to make the slipcover.
I decided to use burlap as the main fabric with a 2 inch ruffled skirt detail of a lightweight cotton fabric in cream-allowing 5 inches of the cute wood legs to show. This project created a great accessory simple enough to fit any casual decor...and the burlap gives a great texture to mix with most other fabrics.
The ottoman measure 20 x 26 x 17 inches tall.

Memorial Day Sale at Old South Antique Mall

Old South Antique Mall in Dothan, Alabama is having a sale this weekend. Bobby and I added a couple of new items to our booth there. And, if you are close enough-you might want to go and check it out...the mall is full of fabulous furniture and decorative items-at great prices, regardless of the sale!!!
Bobby made this new bench using a spindle full size bed headboard. He added a seat of mitered pine boards and some rope trim, and painted it with a black satin...and of course distressed it a bit to add to the charm. This piece could take the place of a couple of chairs at your farm table...or add a couple of pillows and use it on your screened porch overlooking the lake!
I added a 60" loveseat...a second hand piece I am sure you can tell by the "beautiful" shiny blue upholstery...but the piece is clean and the best part-the cushions are a down blend!! It is a classic with the small rolled arms and 4 cushions. Bobby adjusted the seat height a bit to make it more "user friendly". It now has a seat height of a comfortable 19 inches. I made the slipcover of the same natural cotton duck I used for a previous piece. I love this fabric-not too white to fear...but light none the less. I bought a full bolt of this fabric because I thought it would be great in so many applications. It has a background of off white with a few crossthreads of a warm chocolatey gray. A most comfortable loveseat for the price...and easy to clean-simply remove the covers, wash and dry :)

Shaunna's Slips (Part 2) and a few FAQ

First of all- an update on our Alabama beaches...they are OIL FREE for now-as beautiful as ever...you can see from a few of the pics I posted!!! Just wanted you to know...come for a visit :)

Now, on to the business at hand- Shaunna's chair and a half...and ottoman- oversized, to say the least. I just completed (YAY!!!!) the slips for these! Shaunna now has options - the prewashed and dried white 10 ounce cotton duck tailored slipcovers - a perfect option for summer and the new look Shaunna has going in her beautiful home!!! And, option 2...remove the slips and use the original red upholstery for: 1) a quick color change or 2) while washing and drying the white ones :)

So let's move on to some Frequently Asked Questions...I receive calls with usually some of the same basic questions regarding slipcovers-I love the phone calls and emails, so keep them coming :) But, for those of you who might be a bit shy, here is a "getting started" list for slipcovers...
1) What is the best kind of furniture to slipcover?
Answer: Most any piece of furniture can be slipcovered...but as for me and my shop, I prefer any upholstered piece (sofa, loveseat, club chair, ottoman). I make separate covers (with cording detail and zipper closures) for each cushion. Some pieces have semi-attached back cushions...and I have been known to do a little minor "surgery" to remove these cushions so that they can be covered as separate pieces. It doesn't hurt a thing (unless you want to go back to your original upholstery)...and really makes for a better piece of furniture.
2) What about dining room or kitchen chairs?
Answer: Yes, I will slipcover these as well. Some wood frame chairs slip better in two pieces-one that slides over the back and a separate piece for the seat and skirt. Other options, like the dining chairs I slipcovered a couple of posts back, are one piece little dresses...with a few dressmaker details- this is where you can add your own ideas :) Options include skirt length, button detail, tailored or cottage-y design elements...
3) What kind of fabric do I choose?
Answer: This depends on your design style...but, above all, for a slipcover...you want to be able to wash and dry the cover (after all, that is the idea). So, be sure to choose a washable fabric. And, on this topic, some of your fabric stores and websites may insist that the cotton fabric you are selecting is "dry clean only"....well, if it is a true cotton fabric...buy a yard and take it home and wash and dry it-see what happens. This is a great way to test the fabric before you put lots and lots of $$$$$ into the yardage. If you do not like the way it looks, try again (look for a different fabric). I have made slipcovers with heavier upholstery fabrics...but, I am limiting that option for now-you must check with me before I agree to do this. It just does not make sense to me to sew a slipcover out of a thick, heavyweight chenille upholstery that cannot be washed. And, furthermore, my sewing machine needles just can't handle the pressure :) If you want some of this heavy weight fabric, maybe add a couple of pillows using these materials.
The best fabrics for slipcovers are cotton ducks, either 7 or 10 ounce-your choice (Shaunna chose the 10 ounce for more durability), linens, denims, and other medium weight natural cotton fabrics. Cotton ducks come in a variety of prints as well as solids...so, check them out on the millions :) of fabric websites available. Look in the home decor fabric section-54"-60" width is best. And, occasionally, since I LOVE to buy fabrics at great prices,...I may have something you would like available...let me know if you would like to see a few swatches-I can take a few pictures and email or I will even mail you a swatch :)
4)How much fabric do I buy?
Answer: This all depends on the piece of furniture you are covering. Basically, you will need about the same yardage as would be required if you were having the piece reupholstered. But, remember to add a little to this depending on the skirt style (ruffled skirts use more fabric than tailored ones) and add a little extra for shrinkage. There are reupholstery charts all over the internet-google and find one...look for "your" piece of furniture...and there you go. Basically, standard club chairs take about 7 yards, standard sofas (what is standard? I don't know....each piece is different really-but just a basic size) require about 17-20 yards, loveseats somewhere in between, and ottomans, depending on the size, a couple of yards...Shaunna order 50 yards for her "huge" oversized 96" sofa, chair and a half, and large ottoman...I have not measured the leftover fabric, but there may be somewhere in the 8-9 yards area. I think these pieces took about 40 yards total.
5)Do I have to wash and dry my fabric?
Answer: If you want to be able to wash and dry your slipcover, then this is a MUST!!!! Otherwise, your slipcover will shrink after you wash it, and it will never fit again :( All that $$$ for fabric and labor would be wasted...And, if you are too afraid to wash and dry the fabric, I will adjust my labor pricing and do this part for you. Basically, cut your yardage into 4-6 yard increments and wash and dry....it really is just that easy :)
6) How much will my slipcover cost? What is the labor price?
Answer: This depends on the piece of furniture and the details you would like. My current labor pricing is as follows: club chairs starting at $150, loveseats starting at $200, sofas starting at $250, and ottomans starting at $75. As I noted, details take extra time...and buttons, cording, zippers and thread are costs to me as well-so if you have a particular piece and have a few ideas...and would like a price quote, contact me. I will be happy to figure this for you.
And for payment options...I do not require any money when I get started, unless you are purchasing fabric from me. I do, however, expect payment in full at delivery-either by cash, check, or... I am now offering invoicing by PayPal for those of you who like to pay online. Just let me know which you prefer.
7) I live a million miles away... will you slipcover my piece of furniture if I send you measurements and photos?
Answer: NO!!! I mean, I can't :( I would hate to waste your fabric-after all, you will have quite a bit of $$$ invested in it...and I require the piece of furniture (as I stated earlier, each piece is different) for making your custom slipcover. I am very picky about fitting the slipcover to the piece of furniture. I like a bit of oversize...but to do this and follow the "lines" of your particular piece of furniture ( without having it in my workshop) would take a magician...or maybe a simple "over the counter" slipcover is what you need...But, if you want a custom slipcover for your piece, it is best that your seamstress (or at least that is what I require) have the item that is to be covered. I offer a pick-up and delivery service for my slipcovers....well, Bobby does this part :) And, if you are close enough, say 2-3 hours from my shop...or you can meet us in between, we will be happy to pick up your piece!!
*******I will, however, make slipcovers for ottomans without the piece-so, for you who live far, far away-send me a photo or two...and some measurements-either through my email or my Etsy shop...I will respond with yardage requirements, labor pricing,...and I can ship your finished slipcover to you!
8) How long will it take?
Answer: Well, this is not an easy answer. But depending on my schedule-I try not to keep your item but a week, maybe two...my space is limited, too...so, I don't really want to store your piece for long :) (Alice, if you are there....I know we discussed your chair earlier-I still have it and your fabric, I promise -you kind of knew my crazy schedule-your slipcover is coming soon-thanks so much for your patience :)
9) Are you the "great oz" of slipcovers? HAHAHAHA!!!
Answer: No, by all means....there are lots of seamstresses out there who do a much better job than I do, I am sure...but, I have been at this for awhile...so I thought it would be helpful for all of you out there to have a few clues...I love my job-sometimes it gets a bit hectic with the deadlines from the decorators for drapes and pillows and bedding...but, I still love it! And, I am truly thankful that I have been given this ability and talent from God...a way that I can help with my family's finances and meet some of the most lovely and interesting people from near and far. A Day Away for a Little R & R (HA!)

Every now and then, it's good to get away...so we are doing just that-a quick day trip to the beach-a getaway of sorts, I guess. It's one of my favorite beaches, although we probably won't have time to walk on the sand-it's ok, really. I would just like to have a little time left over ( after our headboard and bedding installation at the condo) to visit the cutest of vacation home get-aways...The Fish Camp at Orange Beach, Alabama. The Fish Camp is a great little development on Wolff Bay of individually owned cottages. The architecture is designed to be a Southern style fish camp community with luxury amenities. Bobby and I happened upon this little retreat a few years ago while working on a drapery and bedding installation...by the way, we make house calls-and beach house calls, and vacation house calls!!!!
It is good to be away and see new things...a sort of inspiring trip... I am sure it will be!!
I wish we could stay awhile, but...I have a couple of pieces of furniture to finish "slipping"...

Bobby's Latest-A Pair of Benches in Softened Cream

Bobby just completed these adorable benches! And, great extra seating they would be...in your sunroom, playroom, at the breakfast table, or on any covered porch. Add a couple of pillows to each for a cozy, comfy look. Each spindle bench measures 30 inches wide x 43 inches tall (at the back) x 19.5 inches deep. The seat height is a perfect 19 inches...
The finish is a slightly distressed softened cream. Bobby has plans to display this pair at Old South Antique Mall, but that may be a few days away....so, if you are interested in these two--let us know. I am sure Bobby will be happy to deliver them...depending on your location :)
The set will be priced at $210 at the antique store...until then, however...$180 for the pair!!

Shaunna's Slips ( Intro and Part 1)

So, to tell you the truth, in the beginning this new chic had us sort of "shakin' in our boots"...I mean-I started hearing "have you seen Shaunna's blog ?"....not once, not twice, but lots and lots and lots. And the only Shaunna I knew of at all had been in school with my children...Could it be that Shaunna? She was painting furniture and decorating? She kind of appeared suddenly and with great reviews...and I looked her up and was quite impressed :) And I told Bobby to take a look at this blog-look what she's doing...and what did he say? First of all, he said "she looks like her momma, doesn't she?"...well now, if you have any knowledge of history in our county, you know that's a compliment-and in more ways than one :) And I said, "look at her furniture, Bobby, it's good, isn't it?..."
And so the word on the streets was that the antique store where we house and hopefully sell our painted and repurposed furnishings would probably close and we would all go broke :)...blah, blah, blah, drama, ...Anyway, then Bobby (the wise, good man) said, "y'all be nice to that little girl..."
And I thought...you know, he's right...we want our artsy town to be the best....and to have lots of great artistic people-all different-with his or her own unique talents...there is room for all of us. We do all have somewhat varied styles...from a little rustic and primitive to refined and fresh. So if you haven't had the opportunity to meet Shaunna, do it now...she's charming and it's great to have a new artsy friend....any day :)
Now that we are finished with the introduction...I am truly honored that Shaunna contacted me to make her slipcovers!!!! And what big furniture pieces she has-on the scale of small to large, Shaunna's pieces are HUGE! They are comfy, cozy, oversized and THE PERFECT PIECES FOR SLIPCOVERS!!!!! I love the style-all separate cushions...and great arms! Shaunna's fabric of choice...well, if you know Shaunna, you know that answer-WHITE COTTON DUCK!! The transformation to this casual, beachy look is perfect for summer...take a look at the photos. Hey Shaunna, please share photos on your blog, pretty please-my space (even my new workspace) does not do these oversized beauties justice....the photos will be much better taken in a larger space, I am sure.
So, this is the sofa....we decided to start with the largest piece and work down to the chair and a half and ottoman. Shaunna prewashed and dried her fabric (THANKS FOR SAVING ME LOADS-pun intended- OF TIME :) And I know you did not have time to do this laundry, either, Shaunna...really-thanks! Oh, and a word about washing slipcovers. I serge all raw edges so...if your slipcover fabric has been pre-laundered, that should take care of shrinkage issues for later, but they are kind of like your jeans....so if you dry your cotton slipcovers totally...they will fit tightly, but they will stretch and be fine. (So especially on the cushion covers...the big ones, you might feel as though you are arm wrestling a bear to get them on, but it is worth the effort :)
And my, how I wish that before I had priced the labor for these great pieces, I had seen that beautiful turquoise dresser in Shaunna's entryway (see it HERE). Now that would have been the swap :) I LOVE THAT PIECE!!!!! I love what you are doing with your home Shaunna. I love unique pieces of old furniture...and remade pieces of furniture...and pieces that Bobby builds...and well, I love furniture with a story.
OK...so the sofa is ready, Shaunna-call me when you are home and we will deliver this one and pick up the next pieces. I hope you love them, my new "artsy" friend :) I truly appreciate your business and I am so honored that you considered me for your project! Talk to you soon!!!

Lovely Crumpled Linen Slipcovers

My latest slipcover project: dining room chairs-a bit involved and a larger bit time consuming. But the result I think is lovely. Bleached white medium weight linen, pre-laundered (washed and dried)...this is what gives the linen that wonderful crumply look...and, after you wash and dry it once-you can do it again with no fear :) I admit it is somewhat scary to put that new wrinkle free linen into the washer and dryer, but it is worth it! Just make sure to cut large pieces, maybe 5-7 yards, for washing. Let me know if you have questions about this process. Again, it is "so" worth it!
The texture after washing lends a sort of rustic effect to the fabric...which works beautifully with the sophisticated elegant look in a dining room. The plan was to make the slipcovers follow the curves of the backs of the chairs...ok, so we will use cording...and, then the armchairs-armchairs? Armchairs always throw a kink into the plan...so much more difficult...and the decision of how to "treat" the arms. Kay, my newest client-and someone who has great ideas-, at first thought, wanted to cover the arms completely. Gasp....could I do that?...never done that on dining chairs...so we left it at "let me get it going and think about it". So, think, think, think....I did.
I made the slipcovers for the armless side chairs first. Really, I want to tell all of you...your seamstress is not making a million dollars-it takes time...and lots of it :) I always worry about charging too much $, but you know, it is custom work....and did I not tell you in an earlier post...I do not have elves that come out at night to do this work (oh how I love that story "The Shoemaker and the Elves")...I stay up late, late, late at night to do this work a lot of the time-hey, maybe if I did not stay up so late, the elves would appear!! Oh, well, I don't know how I got onto that tangent-I just think about it sometimes. No one has mentioned that my prices are too high as of late...only that one time someone on the telephone about a fancy smancy window treatment and a big window, too-well-I guess she was not used to custom sewing :)
Back to the slipcovers now. I completed the side chairs using the lovely crumpled linen for the fronts, backs, cording, and skirts-and an ivory matelasse leaf design for the seats. Kay wanted a back pleat detail...with a tab and buttons-so I chose to use beautiful shell buttons instead of traditional covered buttons. It gives a little "glitz and glam"...pretty shiny buttons-they almost look like little antique mirrors. Kay designed the skirts to be tailored, with pleated corner detail...and tea length, showing just a little of the dark stained chair legs. All in all, very, very pretty and tasteful.
While waiting for the last bit of fabric to wash and dry, I played around with the arm chairs. I kept going back to the covered arm idea. And this is not my first parade...I mean, I have made slipcovers for awhile now-but how to cover that arm???? I decided to treat it like there was a full arm there (like a club chair)...so I corded the top shape of the arm...and sewed fabric to the top shape, creating a totally covered arm. A few of the same details as the side chairs...and a sort of crown effect using smaller shell buttons and a couple of pleats on the fronts. The result is a dining room full of lovely crumpled linen slipcovers-sophisticated and refined, yet rustic and casual...

So I've Been in Hiding...

No, not really...but I have been trying to catch up on my back logged list of about 17 projects...really. It's a good thing that "I love what I do"-otherwise, I might stop now. It gets a little overwhelming sometimes...I am so trying to be timely with everyone's slipcovers, drapes, bedding, and other items. But, without a host of elves to come out at night and work, I can only sew on one machine at a time...speaking of, my favorite serger (the big one...see photos)-the one I love to use for my slipcovers has to go to the repair shop-tomorrow. Bobby has tried to repair it for days and nights to no avail-- So, hopefully Nick at Derrell's in Dothan, Alabama (the greatest sewing machine service and repair shop) will be able to work wonders and get this up and going quickly (while we wait)-I am really, really wishing because I so need it back-(up and running)-to finish the dining room chair slipcovers for Kay :) I do have your ottoman ready, however!!! And, it is good-looking...hope to bring it by to you tomorrow, well today now :)
And, next up, Shaunna's slips-guess what color???? :) I have talked her into washing and drying the fabric to help us speed up the process-thanks Shaunna...that's a lot of fabric, huh? They are going to be great white duck slips-a casual, tailored look...perfect for her and her family.
By the way, I am working in my workroom now-YAY!!!! The house workshop is still a mess-but, I will eventually get it all moved I suppose.
I finally completed a loveseat I have been working on during my "off time"-now that is hilarious...but I like to keep a piece available at Old South Antique Mall . With my "decorator" project going on for so long, everything had to be placed on hold. This loveseat is a second hand immaculate piece that measures 60" long, 36" deep, and has a seat height of 19.5". The skirt has a drop of 12". The fabric I chose for this loveseat is an oatmeal colored cotton duck that has been pre-washed and dried...taking care of shrinkage issues for later. And, if you have little children or pets that are "sweet, messy little things", all the better. Simply remove the slipcover, and wash and dry to clean.
So much has been happening in our world...Grayson (our baby grandson-almost 9 months now) is saying "MOM MOM MOM"-now that's a Mother's Day gift to remember :) Check out Lauren's website -they have lots of new things going on...birdhouses, picture frames, and recipe boxes-to name a few.
And, the chicks are growing...their coop is partially ready-more on that story later.

Some Random Weekend Ideas

Bobby had a few good ideas this weekend that I wanted to share. It was so nice outside...and we didn't have a thing we needed to work on:) Yea, right. I did accomplish moving some of my "things" into my workshop-YAY! I like stuff around...for inspiration, I guess...I just like some pleasing art, old stuff, photos, ...surrounding the space where I work. But, I'm not quite done there:)
Back to Bobby's ideas...outside-I don't have before pictures...and the afters (as I noticed the background) aren't the best...but the ideas...GOOD!
So, first of all, he finished his newest bench...and a BIG BENCH-great for a porch or family room or office waiting area. This bench measures 78" long x 24" deep x 48" tall. He finished it in distressed black. It could probably use a couple of pillows-I know someone you could call to have those made:) I think the bench will probably find its way to Old South Antique Mall in Dothan tomorrow...it is WAAAAY to heavy for Etsy-shipping would probably be one million dollars;) But, if you are interested, we do have a trailer and will deliver within a couple of hours of Troy, Alabama-for WAAAY less than a million dollars-probably free shipping.
We also spiffed up the flower bed in front of the "loft"-the name of the building that houses my workshop. This flower bed allows for a sort of circular drive for the UPS and FedEx delivery trucks. Anyway, the lady banks rose, although beautiful this year, was too heavy and seemed a bit sad. So, we "found" the iron trellis we bought at Pike Road (year before last) and tied the rose to it....wow, absolutely BEAUTIFUL. It looks as though fancy people live here now...or, at least, people who care about their gardens. And, I love our yard and garden and farm, but it is overwhelming (to say the least) to know where to start, and/or stop your yard when it continues into the meadow and field. I must admit, too, that I am no gardener-I love gardens and beautiful yards-but, I have too much going on to fit all that in to my schedule now-maybe tomorrow, Scarlett.
OK....now to the best idea-Bobby made a trellis/arched iron gateway to my workshop!!! And, it was his idea! It is way better than it looks....and you have to see into the future a little , after I have planted the roses and they are climbing and covering this BEAUTY! This little gate used to open to the pasture where we kept Allie's horse-that was a short story!! Anyway, I get attached to anything and everything, gates included...so I wanted to keep the gate, but I wanted Bobby to build a trellis over it with roses and vines...and I can walk through it on my way to "work" each day. Doesn't that sound fun and romantic?! So you see from the pictures what he came up with...and it was instant. He used old-very old-iron railings from somebody's porch I suppose....and they formed an automatic arch-well an imperfect arch because of the broken piece. But, that is ok, right Shaunna? It is one of those perfectly imperfect things. And, it is grand!!! I LOVE IT! And, I will show you pictures after the roses and vines grow...
Oh, I almost forgot....take a look at this lettuce from the garden-I can't believe the rabbits haven't found it!

New Slips and Stuff...Coming Sooner or Later!

Hey! We've been out on the hunt for some "new" projects...not that we have time, but while we're out, we're always on the hunt. And, we found a few things to slipcover and refurbish. I just thought I would share the "befores" now...and, to let you know that I am not exactly sure when the "afters" will post.
I am still working on my "decorator" projects. Those projects sometimes "grow", which is never a bad thing...but it does cut into my time. I really love working on my projects-the projects where I work with the client...it's a bit more personal and fulfilling. But, the decorators know more people...and payday is good any day.
My current job has me wrapped up in cream colored silk and braided trim-over 30 yards of each...for lined and interlined drapery panels for the master; and the same fabric and trim for the windows of the bath made into tailored valances that will be hung from rods and rings. Beautiful...but the off white always scares me a little-afraid I will get it "dirty" before installation time.
So, here are the photos-( including the beautiful roses from the garden)...can't wait to work on these things!!
And, have I told you how much I adore all things and anything "Holly Hobbie"? It's just something about the sweetness -and simple goodness. I love her world...the perfect world.

We've been doing a little Spring cleaning around here...not too much, mind you-just clearing out where we need the space. So, we happened upon these cuties...remember the good 'ol days of "arts and crafts shows"...Boy, it makes me tired just thinking about how much effort we put into having a "good show". The best ones were the fall shows-Pike Road, SAC's Gallery, Ft. Rucker, Ozark,...wow, it makes my head spin to think about it. We worked day and late, late into the night preparing for these-and always hoping for "good" weather so people would show up and buy our "art", and believe me, we needed people to buy our "art".
I really enjoyed painting the things for Spring Shows, too...but, rarely did a show/sale happen before Easter...and, Bobby always said that Spring Shows weren't worth the time and effort involved.
Well, I miss painting these cute holiday decorations. Maybe one day, we will think about showing at an arts and crafts fair again. It would be fun to prepare and display without having to worry about the $$$ :)

A Few "Heart of Dixie" Chicks

Saturday...not always my day "off", but today is chick day at Scott Farms...and Bobby and I have been talking about having a few chickens for eggs. I mean, we live on a farm...and that is what we are supposed to do...everybody says we will "love it". So...here's to raising chickens. There is a really cute article (Chicks are for Kids) in the April/May issue of Mary Janes Farm magazine, a charming publication dedicated to the "farm girl" in all of us:)
OK, now back to Scott Farms...I've included some photos in this post to let everyone know what you are missing...or what I have been missing. It is the greatest farm supply store, ever (and especially in our rural area)-stocking all sorts of animal feeds and supplies; flowers, plants (including herbs) and garden seeds; and all other kinds of necessities for farmers and everybody else. And, along with all the items for sale, the store is a kind of mini museum of sorts with displays of antique farm implements and signs. But today, they were selling chicks!!! And chicken feeders, and waterers, and feed...we bought it all. I think they will have more chicks, and maybe ducks, too, in May.
We have our chicks "at home" now in our children's old rabbit pen...so for a few weeks, they should be fine. They will graduate to the "Pat House" that will become a cute little chicken coop after they grow a little. More on the story of the "Pat House" in a later blog.
Now, Mack, if your store only had fabrics, and pillow forms, and sewing supplies:)

OK...just a quick post to show off this cutie!!! A different vintage chair-do you remember these with the channel backs? I always kind of cringe-it's a little more challenging to make a slipcover "work" on this style...something about that rounded back deal. But this one made me feel better-and who wouldn't??? The fabric is as wonderful as the chair-a great vintage-y looking cotton floral-bright and bold.
So, for the fun chair and fun fabric...a fun little short sassy skirt with gathered front corners and a couple of inverted pleats in the back. Take a look. And check out the channels-it almost takes on a "real upholstery" (like a Pinocchio effect) look.
Now, back to work for me...got lots I have to do and more that I want to do. Have a good day!

Whose law is it anyway?

You know, each and every year ( for the last few it seems anyway), I start doubting my continuous orders right after the holidays. That's when it usually slows a bit, for whatever reason...and I get a little bit "worried". Well, this year-like all the others-it happened. I fretted the whole month of January and a little of February-just not as busy-but maybe, too, the economy stuff and health care (ugh...). So what do I do now? I mean-there are some orders-but not as many "decorator-in-charge" orders. And...we still have 2 children, or should I say "young adults" in college.
I think it is "Murphy's Law" that states that anything that can go wrong does go wrong...or something to that effect...but I always say that it is the "Law of the Land"-either you have nothing to do or way, way, way too much...So that happened too...THANK YOU GOD!!! This is truly God's Law...and I am so thankful (even though I might whine or wonder how I am going to get to everybody).
I am working on a "real decorator" order now (beautiful Schumacher antique gold dot moire fabric drapes and coordinating sofa pillows with a braided cording- the dining room is next, and then the master, I think) ...and those orders CANNOT be put on the back burner, ever. But, I have a chair to slipcover with some of the cutest fabric ever-stay tuned for that one-I'm going to slip it in pretty soon-...and a child's bedroom whose mom keeps calling to see if I'm ready, " yet?"...and some white slipcovers for a set of dining chairs....and a zebra fabric slipcover for an ottoman...and a kitchen window treatment to discuss and figure out...and a living room-drapes...and a master bedroom complete-duvet, shams, and drapes (by April),...a sweet nursery for a precious "grandmother-to-be", ...and a couple other people in Dothan who probably have given up on me by now... And...I have some "great ideas" that I want Bobby and me to work on together. I wish I could do those right now, you know?
This is one of those "love-hate" things....I hate it when I am not busy... and, I love it when I am busy....but I hate having to make people wait...and, it is soooooo difficult to know how long any project is going to take. I work for myself, by myself-I told my mom the other day that I always did love that story "The Shoemaker and the Elves"...but, I have no elves...just me (and I haven't taught Bobby to sew,....yet). That could be a story for another day...
I really want to do all these projects...and I will-if everyone will wait for me. I try to keep an order to my business-although it's really hard not to help someone with a real deadline.
So, I will just keep sewing away...by the way, we are still moving into the workshop-it's going to be great-I can just tell! But, that "law" thing...it takes up lots of time...and I need a couple of weeks off to move-but I'm not complaining...

We have Re-"Stuffed" the Nook...and other new details

Hey... I wanted to let you know that the nook is re-stuffed with lots of fun new and old small treasures. Stop by Troy Antiques on the square in downtown Troy, Alabama and check it out.
Sometimes I wonder if it is all "worth it"...the time, the focus, the time, the time.....and the time.
Where do we focus our efforts? Where should we focus our efforts? Bobby has all he can do , I have all I can do...and, believe me, we are thankful each and every day that this is the case. We praise God from whom all blessings flow...
And, most of all, we love, love, love what we do! That is the best part of our "jobs". People sometimes ask if Bobby is "retired"-because he goes along with me as my personal window treatment "installation expert"-and I guess because he is not at a "real" job. The answer is "No"-Bobby is not retired. He works lots-and late hours-and weekends, too, most times.
But, I think that because we enjoy our work, both Bobby and me, and that for the most part, we work together, it does not seem like a "job".
We truly enjoy all that we do-restoration projects, building, art and sewing projects, light fixture making and repair, re-purposing, light upholstery, refinishing, painting, and the occasional "hunting" for unique finds and treasures...and at the same time mix in visits to our beautiful grandson Grayson...and our children, Lauren, Allie and Brantley-it is most definitely "worth it".
So...just wanted to share that we have added one more thing to our list: Etsy...might as well give it a try. After all, most everything we do is handmade. Just wish we could figure out how to ship a loveseat to Chicago... ;)

MY WORKSHOP IS FINISHED!!!!!!! (Almost...)

Well, the secret is out-there! I have not really told anyone about this-I mean, all of you who know me so well know that I have been wishing and hoping for this. But, I wanted it to be "real" before I shared. I am sooooo excited about my new space! Bobby has been working lots and lots of late hours-and, finally- at last, my workshop space is a reality. I have been working for years-sewing, painting, whatever the project of the moment happens to be-in our small family room and Lauren's bedroom and wherever else in our house that has extra space. And, anytime there was "company a comin'", we would shove all the fabric and whatever out of the way...and, I don't know if anybody really cared, but I always, always felt the need to explain why I had all this stuff in our family room. Well, to tell you the truth, our house is a workshop...and, Bobby and I live in our workshop. But we hope to recapture our home with some long past due updates . Meanwhile, we will be (slowly...and, little by little) moving all of my "supplies" -believe me, it will take quite some time to do this as it takes lots and lots of "supplies" for art and sewing projects.
So I will share a few photos...and, now-I will have an office and workshop to "meet" with you. I know there will always be other things we need to complete...but the space is great!

Children's Bedding...Cute and Bright

It all starts with an inspiration piece...this one when Elly's mom spotted the darling monkey curtain panels from Pottery Barn Kids. She had been looking for the duvet fabric, and when she saw the monkey print-she knew the fabric would be perfect! She called to ask if I could make a duvet from curtain panels. And, the answer is "yes"...as long as you can buy the panels long enough for the duvet length. I used (2) curtain panels-took the lining off and split one panel for the sides. The other fabrics were purchased by Elly's mom-I think they are adorable together...and I can't wait to see pictures after installation.
The bedding group includes a queen duvet/coverlet made of the pink monkey print fabric, corded with brown multi dot using medium size cording, and backed using a light green bed sheet. Also, pillowshams: 2 Euroshams of brown multi dot with a 3" gathered self ruffle. We opted to sew the forms inside, allowing the shams to look the same from both sides--after all, who really washes pillow shams? In addition to the Euros, two standard shams of the cutest rick rack fabric detailing a 2" pleated corner flange using the reverse side of the fabric . Notice the sham back detail in the photos. For the dust ruffle I made a gathered bedskirt using the same rick rack fabric. There are a few accent pillows left to be made...we are awaiting the pink monogram on the green animal print for the 10" x 30" bolster...and I have to add a couple of small pillows-one of yellow minkee dot and one small square pillow to match the Euroshams. There will also be a round tablecloth of yellow and white ticking stripe with a topper of the brown multi dot edged with a cute, cute tassel fringe trim.
The windows will be treated with valances mounted on boards. The boards have a back skirt of the brown multi dot fabric and a front treatment featuring scallops made from the rick rack fabric...showcasing both sides of this fabric.
I will go now and try to complete the accent pillows and tableskirt...by midweek.

It's always so much prettier after installation...to see a drapery project from start to finish...from fabric and lining to drapery panels installed in the "right" room...it really is a good thing! These photos include the silk panels with pencil pleat detail installed in the Music Room...and also, in the same home, beautiful dark green panels in the dining room featuring goblet pleats.

Pencil Pleats

My latest drapery project has been ongoing for a while now. These beautiful warm honey brown silk panels will complete my orders for this home. The decorator for this project requested 9" pencil pleats...which I thought nothing of really, until I started looking for 9" pencil pleat tape. Well, it does exist...in the United Kingdom...and thankfully, there is international shipping.
I thought I would show a few photos of these panels before installation. The panels will be hung in the music room on antique gold iron drapery hardware from www.antiquedraperyrod.com. There are two panels-each one is two and a half widths of fabric-135" wide...with a length of 120".
The homeowner wanted no other trim on these panels, so as to showcase the long pencil pleats.

Black Vintage Settee

Bobby refinished this vintage settee in a hand rubbed, distressed black. A contemporary aqua upholstery fabric with cream chenille dots was used to recover the seat and back cushions.
This settee would make the perfect mudroom bench...or, add a couple of pillows and use it in the foyer. This versatile piece could also be used at the breakfast table as bench seating.
There are so many options for small furniture pieces...and, especially if the piece is vintage (or old)--it adds so much charm to any space.

White Duck Slipcovered Loveseat

Just in time for Spring Break! A small loveseat slipcovered in white cotton duck featuring zippered loose cushions, self-cording, and a tailored floor length skirt. All fabric was pre-laundered...making sure there will be no shrinkage issues. This loveseat finishes at 60" long x 30" high x 32" wide.....perfect for a playroom or large nursery, family room, sunporch...or just about anywhere. All inside edges have been finished with a serger.

Well, I was so excited to get these few pieces of Cooper's Nursery together this morning for Jami to see. Since that did not work out for today...here are a few pictures...more to come later. Hopefully, pictures from the nursery-we still have window treatments to make and install.
I enjoyed creating and putting together Jami's ideas, fabrics, and trims. I know it will be even more adorable in its proper place in the nursery.

Cozy Rustic Pillow

Clearing out a few "odds and ends" pieces of fabric-before my next "real project"-Cooper's Nursery. I made this pillow sham using some leftovers--great for a sofa or loveseat...or, as an added accessory pillow for your bedding.
The damask print in robin's egg blue on burlap colored cotton is a Robert Allen fabric; and, I used a 6" lightweight cream linen with a ripped edge for the ruffle-giving a relaxed look. The back of the sham is a utility natural chevron stripe cotton fabric with a single shell button for the closure.
The sham is shown with a down insert...very comfy and cozy.

For Sale: Antique Chair and Cottage Style Slipcover

Ready for delivery...I just completed a cute slipcover and pillow for an antique chair. This chair is comfy and cozy with cute wood feet and trim. The fabrics I used for the slipcover are a medium weight cotton cottage style floral and coordinating stripe...and a distressed green faux leather for the cushion top and bottom. I opted to make a short skirt, gathered at the corners, to "show off" the chair's stained wood accents. A 16" x 20" matching mixed fabrics pillow completes the set.
The chair will be displayed for sale at Old South Antique Mall in Dothan, Alabama, $225/set.
Labor prices for slipcovers vary according to the piece of furniture and details requested...labor for most chairs starts at $150... Slipcovers are quite labor intensive and I do require the furniture piece to get a correct fit-but we offer pick-up and delivery.
Also...of course, the antique mall accepts cash, check, and debit and credit cards...but, I often forget to mention to individual clients that I offer these payment options for labor and accessories for custom orders. Call or email me for details.

Postcards from the Farm

Work days as usual at the farm during our snow event...I was so surprised to make it through the weekend with no loss of electricity...Amazing!!
I did have to postpone my "dog walks" with Wells (my Old English Sheepdog) and Rocco (Brantley's lab mix)...I could not brave our normal afternoon walk in the pasture with our 5" snowfall. (I've never, ever considered snow shoes here...)
But what a beautiful sight...God's artwork for Southerners to enjoy...

Don't Forget the Pillows...

The slipcover is ready for the vintage sofa! And, the new single boxed cushion is perfect and allows seating for many. With this neutral cotton duck, the owner can easily change her room by adding pillows of her choice. We chose to use self-cording, but other options to consider when planning a slipcover would be a fabric cording in a contrast color or pattern. Also, as I mentioned in an earlier post, there are many skirt options-this tailored option makes for a great casual update.
The cushion cover has a full back zipper closure...allowing for an easier removal for washing. As for the sofa body, the one-piece cover is easy to put in place-the cording fits the arms and back-super simple! Great sofa, great fabric, ...enjoy!

Pair of Slipcovered Ottomans

This is a charming pair of 16" cubes that I have slipcovered in a natural mix color of medium weight linen, pre-laundered of course. Each holds its own on the functional and cuteness monitor...but placed side by side-two is definitely better than one! The ottomans are 15" tall-so the pair finishes at 32" x 16" x 15".
As for the size...you don't even need a plan-they will fit anywhere and are versatile enough for any room. Ideal as ottomans for a couple of chairs, the perfect "coffee table" for a sofa or loveseat, or under a sofa table to pull out for extra seating (although you would hate to hide them).

Coming Soon...A New Slipcover for a Vintage Sofa

This sofa is a classic. And, as you can see in the photos, this piece has great lines and good form-but really old, worn-out cushions. So, not a problem--a new, single cushion will be added...4" seat cushion foam that will be wrapped with a thick batting to add softness. This new cushion will update the sofa and actually make for more seating.
The sofa's owner ordered her fabric...a terrific cotton duck in the color "bramble" (what a neat name for a color) from www.fabric.com. This site has lots and lots (tons) of great fabrics...and, especially many colors of cotton duck--my favorite "go to" fabric for slipcovers. If you can't tell from the image, the color is a great neutral-a khaki-like tan. The fabric has been pre-washed and dried to take care of all the shrinkage issues...and is ready to be cut and sewn into a tailored slipcover for this amazing heirloom. I plan to make this slip with a straight floor length skirt with kick pleats....other options would be a gathered floor length skirt, a gathered or tailored short, sassy skirt to show off the legs, a straight skirt with gathers at the corners only-well, the possibilities are endless...but, this one is going to be tailored and casual...and updated!

Following Through...and a few other windows

I have completed the silk drapery panels for the faux "re-finished" Antique Drapery Rod Hardware. Bobby and I installed these panels and the hardware in a beautiful dining room in the Dothan, Alabama area. The panels have a goblet pleat detail....no extra trim preferred by this client, but the panels and hardware together add all the design needed to finish this room.
Also included in the photographs are window treatments we completed and installed for a couple of guest bedrooms. One guest bedroom window showcases natural heavy weight linen panels with Euro pleats at the header and a black grosgrain ribbon trim sewn onto the lead edges. This small detail of black is a great accent...and to note, the drapery hardware and ceiling fixture are made of black wrought iron.
The second guest bedroom has a beautiful arched window. The client chose a bronze twisted iron drapery rod with small iron rings. The silk panels have a shirred header and are attached to the rings with drapery pins. The silk is a very unusal color of bronze with crossthreads of royal blue. The ceiling fixture, an antique bronze chandelier, completes this room.

Make the Most of your Space

This post includes some pictures from a small breakfast area in the kitchen of our daughter and son-in-law's house. It is a cute space with a window...and used to be less functional. We all love the new look and extra space-hope you do, too! Lauren likes traditional style, as do I; so the "before" space included long panel draperies at the window...and, it was always "a problem area"- seating for 2, maybe 3, at best.
So-for Christmas...Santa and his elves "remodeled" this area to be "user-friendly" for more. Dad, aka "Bobby's Workshop" built benches...and Mom (me) made boxed cushions for the benches, a new and improved "tailored" board mounted window treatment, and new pleated panels for the double window over the sink. The result: a cozy nook to seat several...but, clean-up is simple because nothing is attached. The benches and table slide out of the way for mopping..., and the covers have zipper closures for easy removal and cleaning. The table is small but, with a formal dining room only steps away, serves its purpose for casual meals for the Donofrio family....and maybe Honey and Poppa once in a while.

Antique Drapery Rod Company

This is one great drapery rod source...I have considered having it available in a storefront-but, the investment is huge...for me. So for now, I will continue to offer this hardware to my clients by showing sample rods, rings, finials and colorways.
This company offers beautiful iron, wood, and bamboo drapery rods, rings, finials, brackets...and lots of other accessories, including items for the bath.
I've included some photos of a recent client's order...for wood hardware for her dining room. She opted for a whitewash gold colorway, which is beautiful alone...but, after receiving it and seeing the fabric (a gorgeous soft green silk with crossthreads of bronze) for the drapes-it was necessary to alter the color of the hardware. I applied a dark glaze to each piece...and, as you can see...the difference is amazing...
I know she will be totally thrilled with the finished product.

Ready-to-Hang Drapery Panels

As a routine, I make window treatments for clients from fabrics they have selected and bought....then, Bobby and I deliver and install the hardware and treatment....but,
if you have existing drapery rods or plan to install the drapery hardware yourself...I will be happy to make your new treatments. Some simple measurements are all that I need to give you the fabric yardage required. As for fabrics...where to look and buy....there are lots of on-line resources as well as great shops in Dothan, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Atlanta.
These panels were made from a faux silk in antique gold with a diamond pattern and embroidered small dots of gold, cinnamon, and brick red. They are lined with a napped cotton-interlining and lining in one fabric-giving the drapery fabric: 1) protection from the sun, and 2)extra fullness and body.
I made four panels that the client will use to hang on 2 decorative rods over single windows. These panels feature Euro pleats...there are other pleat styles available, but this style has been very popular and showcased in current decorating magazines.

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice...

That's what little girls are made of...And, of course, the nursery should reflect such sweet thoughts!
As I have stated in other posts, nurseries rank among my favorites in sewing projects-this one included! A cute array of mix and match fabrics, some ready made accessories, and cute trims all blended beautifully to make a darling custom nursery for the precious baby-to-be.
The photos I am showcasing include: a cozy platform swivel rocker slipcovered in mixed fabrics with pink cording, of course; a ruffled lumbar pillow to coordinate with the rocker; ready-made curtain panels of white with pink dots detailed with an added band of green and pink toile and cute ribbon pom pom tassel trim with green scalloped edging sewn onto a smaller pink fabric band; a roman shade of the toile fabric with a band of solid pink at the hem, interlined for body and lined with blackout for naps during the daytime; a crib skirt of gathered green cord cotton chenille with a band of solid pink at the hem; and, my favorite-the crib quilt/coverlet...a patchwork of the assorted fabrics, corded with the solid pink and edged with a ruffle of the toile-and backed with the softest pink minky dot fabric.
I was thrilled to be called for this project-I actually slipcovered this chair when "mom-to-be" was just a little girl...for her room. Wow-where does the time go? But that is the beauty of slipcovers for special pieces of furniture- it gives the piece a makeover. And with pre-washed and dried fabrics and a zipper closure on the seat cushion, this slipcover will launder easily.
Just a note...these pictures were taken while the items were being made...so, if possible, I will take more at installation!

Not your Everyday "Cottage" or "Cabin"

I wanted to post a few pictures from a "grand new home"....just to let you know that although my name "Cottage and Cabin" might make you think "simple"...I do occasionally create interiors for some of this area's grandest of houses. And, I am truly honored to be able to work with the homeowners to bring the sophisticated elegance they wish for their interiors.
These photographs include: master bedroom draperies-silk wide stripes, lined with blackout for light control and interlining to add softness-these draperies showcase inverted pleats, and are mounted on a contemporary traverse rod; natural linen drapery panels mounted on a small iron rod for a guest room; a child's room with a board mounted shaped valance and lined drapes along with a matching shower curtain and large upholstered valance for the adjoining bath; and, roman shades made of a brown plaid for a little boy's room.

I also made assorted bedding (duvets, pillows, and bedskirts) to compliment these rooms.

It is certainly a joy to be able to create these interior furnishings, and I am blessed to have such wonderful clients. I truly feel that I have been given the "opportunity of a lifetime" with each and every home- be it cottage, cabin, or castle!

Bobby's Workshop

I would not have much to post without the help of my super hero carpenter husband, Bobby. He has a terrific talent for finsh carpentry and cabinet building and old house repair and workshop building (hint, hint) and curtain rod installation and plumbing and some electrical issues and just anything else you could need or want..... I just wish he had more time, but, don't we all?

Well, he is definitely the hard work behind all of our creations and re-makes. So, if your older home needs help or you want a special piece built per your specifications....call him, or me if you can't find him-and I will help you track him down.

This is our latest...a cute, little black settee-upholstered with a 5" foam cushion covered with sage cotton toile. Cording detail of green check cotton accents the cushion as well as the matching pair of 16" ruffled pillows. Bobby has built settees like this in the past for our friend, Gail, who manages Troy Antiques...and, she is a super seller!!!! Our black settee will be available at Old South Antique Mall in Dothan after Thursday...we have a smaller booth (the nook under the stairs) at Troy Antiques, but we have to limit the size of our items there. Check out these antique stores often for all sorts of decorating ideas and unusal pieces.

And...I am so excited about these last few postings, not only for the new items available, but the location of the photos (hint #2)....more surprises coming soon.

Mixing a Pair of Vintage Armchairs

Vintage chairs...not perfectly refinished, but perfectly suited to mix and use in a casual setting using coordinating fabrics. Maybe you would not want to use this pair of chairs in a formal room...but I love using "not- so- perfectly finished" pieces throughout a home. To me, it adds charm for a piece of furniture to show its age...and, it definitely makes it easier to have a "pet friendly" and "child friendly" home.

These chairs are searching for the perfect cottage-for sturdy seating in your dining or breakfast room, or to accent an existing space on your sunporch.

I made fitted slipcovers with ties for the backs and seats using a cottage floral cotton fabric. As an accent, I added bias cording using a terra cotta plaid. And, of course, mix and match pillows complete the set.

Make-overs, Do-overs

Bobby and I were working in our booth at Old South Antique Mall in Dothan, Alabama just a couple of weeks ago. And, you know how you get tired of looking at the same thing...and you are just ready for a change? Sometimes, all it takes is to change the way you are looking...or change your point of view.

We had a few great vintage oak dining chairs that we were trying to sell in our booth....kind of scruffy from years of use, and, or abuse. You have probably seen them or some like them...the seats (that used to be woven cane bottoms) are busted out-but still, we thought, someone would love to have these re-finished and re-caned to make perfect seating for their oak pedestal table. Well, for months, absolutely no one saw the potential in these chairs.

So, what to do but make a change. Somehow, in moving some things around, the chairs landed side by side...and I saw it--a bench...made from a few chairs put together. And, what a great idea...I could use fabric (my favorite collectible) to cover the bench seat. There...an antique chair "make-over" and booth piece "do-over".

We used the stained chairs together to make a three-chair bench. I used a fruit and floral fabric with a soft yellow background for the upholstered bench...and added detail with a small check bias cording. I also made a lumbar pillow using the same mix and match fabrics to accent the chair backs...great "cottage-y" look-and, perfect for a covered porch, hallway, sunroom, mudroom-or any other space you have to show off this cute piece.

The two black chairs worked out to make an adorable smaller bench. I used different fabrics-still mixing a vibrant floral print with a color coordinated stripe for cording detail. And, again, using the same fabrics, I added a pillow for the back.

These benches will become part of our booth "do-over" in Dothan on Thursday.

New Year, New Slipcovers...

Happy New Year everyone! A little late with my wishes, but as usual, we have had many busy days~at work and at home. I am sure many of you know that my precious little Grandson, Grayson, was hospitalized for several days at the beginning of the new year with RSV. (Lauren blogged about Grayson's hospital visit~ www.gracethroughourworld.blogspot.com.) This was not the best of beginnings for this year, but-we praise God for his recovery!!!! And, I am so thankful to have him home and happy....so, we are truly blessed and, with the new year, we will now proceed.
I am now playing "catch up" with my sewing projects, but have managed to add a few new pieces to "my booth" at OLD SOUTH ANTIQUE MALL in Dothan and to "the nook under the stairs" at Troy Antiques. I will post some other items over the next few days, but for now-a sofa with a natural cotton slipcover. This piece is 90" long and 36" deep- oversized and comfy-with 5" boxed seat cushions and traditional rolled arms. The slipcover has a tailored skirt that falls from the cushion deck and all pieces are self-corded. The cushions have zippered closures. This 100% cotton has a small pattern that gives the fabric great texture. The fabric has been prewashed and dried, taking care of all shrinkage issues. Delivery is available-free of charge-for the Dothan or Troy area.

Talk about "Merry and Bright"!!!!

I know you have all been so very busy with Christmas decorating and parties and shopping...and, if you are in my world...working!!! Trying to mix it all in when you have 7 balloon shades to make, 4 roman shades to finish, 2 sweet little girl dresses to fit in before the wedding, kids still in college, and a partridge in a pear tree-well, it all seems to get a little or a lot overwhelming....and then...I like to take a step back and put it all in perspective.

I am so thankful for all the jobs, friendships, family matters, and sewing "emergencies" that come my way. I know that I am never given more than I can handle, though at times, I wonder. And, I hope that I have been able to help make your home a little happier or a little more like you want it-that is my wish. You have certainly been a blessing to me, whatever the part. I wish you the Merriest Christmas ever!!!

And, I look forward to the New Year with lots of new ideas to "make and do".

The Stockings are Hung....it's Christmas time soon!!!

This is the time of year that your sewing speed determines your income....well, sort of. Decorators are calling, individual clients are calling....people are getting their homes ready for entertaining...it is really a fun time...and, then, the week before Christmas, Bobby and I push everything out of the way and hide our "work stuff" so that we can host a little family meal for a few of us...and...boy, would I love to be getting my house ready, too!

Bobby and I are planning some ideas for our house-and I hope maybe next year will be the year....our family is growing and I want to be able to host a family gathering or two....so, that is our plan...could there possibly be enough time to get it done before next year? But, for now....I will do my best to finish the dining rooms and family rooms and bedrooms I have promised...and, really, the weeks get faster and faster the closer it gets to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I've included some photos of our "nook" space at "On the Square Antiques" in Troy. We have added a few vintage Christmas decorations to go along with the club chair and ottoman that I slipcovered in a cottage style floral Waverly fabric, prewashed and dried...also a valance in matching and coordinating fabrics-great for a home office or craft room. A few black painted side tables and a black cupboard with hand painted detail on the doors are also included in our Cottage and Cabin booth in Troy.

I have added some cabin style Christmas stockings to our spot inside Old South Antique Mall in Dothan...these are made from a charming tattered vintage quilt and burlap, and backed with cream homespun. I will take special orders on stockings using your quilt or fabrics of your choice...call soon!! And, Happy Decorating!!!

A Special Song...

A great beginning to my day...a friend with a delivery of "wine ice" and gifts wrapped in vintage wrap-and inside, vintage Holly Hobbie Christmas glasses, a Mary Engelbreit sewing caddy with a vintage needle card tucked inside...later in the morning, calls from my daughters...and late in the afternoon, a visit from my son who surprised me with a bouquet of fall colored daisy mums and a card...what a great visit, and we ate cake!!!!

But just after noon....I had not heard from Mom or Dad-I thought perhaps they were being sweet and letting this day pass quietly-as I wished. My Mom had asked to take me to lunch, but I had some deadlines of course with this date being so close to Thanksgiving...so, we celebrated instead at their home with a super meal last week-with gifts and all, so it was not really a big deal about today...although, Mom had mentioned that Dad had called my sister and sang "Happy Birthday" to her the week before..........well, was I jealous??? Maybe....but, I really am so happy that Dad is doing so well without his oxygen...his health has improved and all seems good. So, call it "jealousy" or "just glad to have him here to talk to", I wanted my song, too...

Anyway, I called Mom (to ask for my song)...and, she immediately put Dad on the phone-

He sang! I cried...it was perfect!

I have another friend who perfectly described my "bubble"...she said that I loved life in my "bubble world", and she is right...God has truly blessed me with a wonderful husband and children, a brand new grandson, a super terrific family, the best of friends, and a life that I love living and look forward to each day. I thank Him for the continuous work and jobs he provides for me and my family...and for blessing us with talents and artistic abilities that we use to support ourselves. In today's world, with so many people without jobs and hurting in other ways...I know that I am truly blessed...and I have truly lived a charmed life. And, for this, I am thankful. And thanks, Daddy, for singing for me...
